Hon. Samuel Tanner was born 04 October 1787 in Southampton County, Virginia. He died 25 March 1874 in Athens, Limestone, Alabama and was buried 26 March 1874 in Athens City Cemetery, Athens, Limestone, Alabama.
Obituary: (Athens Post) "March 27,1874: At his residence, in this place, at 12 minutes to 1 o'clock, on Wednesday, the 25th inst. Samuel Tanner, Sr., the oldest citizen of Athens, in the 87th year of his age". (Athens Post dated Friday, April 3, 1874) "Samuel Tanner, Sr., the oldest citizen of our town, who died at his residence in this place, on Wednesday, the 25th ult. Was born near Norfolk, Southampton, Virginia, in the month of October 1787 and was consequently in the 87th year of his age. At quite an early age he married and removed with his wife to the vicinity of Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where he remained for a number of years. He came to Madison Co., in this state with his family about the year 1818 where he lived sometime, and finally removed to Athens to make his home, in the month of February 1824, more than half a century since."
Samuel married (1) Jane Foster on 24 January 1807 in Southampton County, Virginia. Jane was born in Virginia. She died before 05 December 1814 in Northampton County, North Carolina from childbirth complications and was buried 31 October/01 December 1814 in Northampton County, North Carolina.
Samuel married (2) Margaret Elizabeth Kitchens on 05 December 1814 in Northampton County, North Carolina. Margaret was born 12 October 1794 in Norfolk, Virginia. She died 24 June 1875 in Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee and was buried 25 June 1875 in Athens City Cemetery, Athens, Limestone, Alabama.

Tanner, Alabama south of Athens was named for him and he is noted as the first mayor of Athens.
