The son of Francis & Anna Veal, he worked as a farmer , a stone cutter and a railroad watchman. He married Mary Ellen Estes in 1873 and they had five children together: Hetty T. (b-1875 m-Hardeman), Martha May "Dovie" (b-1877 m-#1 Ratterree #2 Parker #3 Chapman #4 Swafford), Anna M. (b-1878), Annie C. (b-1886 m-Palmer), Johnnie Leona (b-1888 m-Cheatham), and Columbus G.H. (b-1891).

"VEAL--The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Zachariah Taylor Veal, Mrs. Doshie Hardiman, Mrs. Nannie Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Cheatham, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cheatham, Mrs. Davie Edwards, of Montgomery, Ala.; Mr. C. C. Veal, of McCool, Miss; Mr. Ben Veal, of Stone Mountain, Ga., are invited to attend the funeral of Mr. Zachariah Taylor Veal, this (Sunday) afternoon at 2 o'clock from Woodward Avenue Baptist church. Interment Sylvester cemetery. The following gentlemen are requested to serve as pallbearers and meet at the residence at 1:30 o'clock: Mr. J. C. Estes, Mr. V. C. Estes, Mr. J. T. Estes, Mr. J. R. Cheatham, Mr. C. H. Cheatham and Mr. A. M. Edwards. Awtry & Lowndes Co., funeral directors."

According to Mr. Veal's death certificate, he lived at 48 Kelley St. in Atlanta, and he died in a hospital there. His parents were Frank Veal and Annie Garrett.
