Johanna (Hannah) was born in the Atlantic Ocean on board the ship "Forest Monarch." She said, " When I was born, I was rocked in the cradle of the deep." She saw Johnston's Army enter Salt Lake City. She saw Martin Harris speak in the Tabernacle. They moved to Manti. She spoke Danish. She married Jorgen Madsen on 12 Dec 1870 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City Utah with three other couples. They lived in a one room adobe house while they built a newer home on 5th South and Main. It was finished in 1872. Eight of their sons and daughters was born there. Grandfather Ole Madsen planted rose bushes along the fence. Her husband, Jorgen, farmed, raised stock then freighted goods to mining camps. She helped prepare the loads. In the 1890's they raised sheep, purchasing them from the money from selling the farm land. Her husband received a call to a mission in Denmark in 1907l. They sold the sheep except for 75 lambs to help. She bought a cream separator and had a dairy herd. She watched the Manti Temple being built and helped make clothes for one of the men. She spent hours with Andrew Jensen as he wrote and recorded the histories of Manti and the pioneers. She and her daughter Ellice, helped compile the Pioneer Song Book. She was a charter member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She formally filled out the papers in 1937, #9694.
She is the mother of Ernest, Evelyn, Ida, Ellice, Spencer William, Mary Henrietta, Loy, Leslie Jorgen, Clifton Vernon and Baby Madsen.
