Rachel Rebecca Torrence, born 26 September 1857, at Roanoke, in Huntington County, Indiana and died 9 November 1947, in Leith, North Dakota.
Rachel was the daughter of James Weseley Torrence (1831-1879) and his wife and cousin, Lucretia Jane Torrence (1838-1873). The Torrence family left its native Scotland and settled in Northern Ireland before 1630, and then immigrated to Pennsylvania sometime during the 1740s, before settling shortly after the turn of the 19th century in Ohio.
Rachel married on 18 June 1876, at Canal Winchester in Fairfield County, Ohio Niclaus Emch (who in the U.S. went by Nicholas Carlton Emch) (1852-1930).
Rachel and her husband initially settled in Liberty Township in Fairfield County, Ohio. In 1881, they moved west to Lancaster County, Nebraska and then in 1883, to Wayne County, Nebraska where they rented farms. In 1906, Nicholas homesteaded in what would become Grant County, North Dakota where they both lived for the rest of their lives.
Rachel borne the following children for Nicholas: James Herbert "Bert" Emch (1877-1973), Franklin "Frank" Perry Emch (1879-1963), Ora "Orie" Orlando Emch (1881-1954), Nellie Viola (née Emch) Kamrath (1883-1961), Maude B. (née Emch) Jones (1885-1961), Roy Emch (1887-1952), Creata Emch (1889-1894), Carlton Nicholas Emch (1892-1959), Edythe Mary (née Emch) Jones Heaps (1896-1988), and Charles "Charlie" Rea Emch (1898-1977).
