Merlin Sawyer, 81, died Wednesday, July 6, 1988 in Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis, Wyoming after a long illness. He was born March 4, 1907 in Hatch, Utah, the son of Levi and Rhoana Elizabeth Hatch Sawyer.

He came to Wyoming with his parents at a very early age and spent his lifetime in this area. He married Virginia Moody April 23, 1930 in Columbus, Montana. They made their home in Lovell where he served as a police officer for many years. He also worked for the Big Horn County Sheriff's office for several years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and horseback riding. He was an active member of the L.D.S. Church.

Survivors include his wife of Thermopolis; one son, Norman Sawyer of Mesa, Arizona; four daughters, NaWana V. Wallace of Thermopolis, Marilyn Gilbert of Mayor, Arizona, Marlene Landolt of Greeley, Colorado, and Yvonne Walker of Lovell; three sisters, Ireta Mills of Worland, Wyoming, Venessa Gibson of Greeley, Colorado, and Delpha Orcutt of Mesa, Arizona; 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, and 8 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 9, 1988 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lovell Wyoming Stake Center with Bishop Jack Nicholls officiating. Burial will be in the Lovell Cemetery. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge of arrangements.
