The father of three widely seperated children, Mr. Bell only recently was the recipient of numerous well wishes when he celebrated his 83rd birthday on Feb. 15. The end came peacefully which fulfilled physicians and relatives hopes that he might be spared pain. Ill from heart attacks, Mr. Bell was put to bed less than a week ago and death was caused when pneumonia developed.
Born in 1854 in Rockbridge county near Goshen, the son of Marshall Bell and Charlotte Crawford Bell, he worked on his father's farm until 24 years of age when he entered the mercantile business in Goshen. After working in Goshen and Millboro, he was associated with the Longdale Iron Company in Alegheny county.
Mr. Bell married Miss Ruth Lee McCue of Fort Defiance on Oct. 24, 1882, the couple coming to Waynesboro in 1901 where Mr. Bell operated the Bell Grocery Co. After selling this business to Barksdale and McCray, he traveled for a manufacturing concern, in Virginia and West Virginia. He was for 50 years an officer in the Presbyterian church, here and elsewhere.
Survivors include his widow, 2 sons, Dr. Nelson Bell, stationed iat Tsing Kaing Pu, China; andJ. McKim Bell, general manager of the General Electric and Tramway Company of Brazil; a daughter, Mrs. D. L. Norris, of Greenville, S. C.; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
