Killed in battle of Atlanta, Ga.
He is buried among men of the 20th Ohio and other regiments of the 17th Army Corps.

In the Ohio Roster, Pvt. David Griffith, Co A 20th Ohio, entered service in 1862, for 9 months term, age 44, mustered out July 13, 1863, on expiration of term of service; drafted. He received an Invalid's pension in 1890 and on the record it indicates that he died in 1910. There is a Find A Grave Memorial, # 68481643, that fits this profile.

This grave may belong to R. P. Griffith, Co A 3rd Iowa Infantry, who died July 22, 1864, near Atlanta. The 3rd Iowa was a regiment in the 17th Army Corps. He has a monument in Clayton County, Iowa. (Find A Grave Memorial # 31568959.) It is not clear if it is a memorial or if he is buried there. He was promoted Captain, but not sure if he was mustered. Some Officer's remains were returned home for burial, so it is possibly his grave. Further research of family documents, local newspaper, and GAR records may give answers.

Thanks to Richard S. Clark (#46794212) for raising the question of who is really in this grave.
