Jan. 29, 1906-Dec. 25, 2008 Alvin Lonzo Bertram was born at Burfield, Kentucky, January 29, 1906 and died December 25 at the age of 102. He was born January 29, 1906, the son of James Ahile and Thursie Fairchild Bertram. He was one of three children, a sister Daisie and brother Willie. He was married to Rosa Hucaby for 55 years and to this union one child was born, Alvin, both preceded him in death. He was later married to Marie Flynn, who died in 1990 and then to Bertha Hurt, who died in 1997. Lonzo is survived by a daughter-in-law Gloe Lovelace Bertram; four grandchildren-Dr. Robert (and wife Lynn Floyd) of Salisbury, N.C., Charles Bertram (and wife, Sharon Moore) of Lexington; Carol Elizabeth Bertram of Lexington; and Deborah Bertram Stevens (and husband, Kenny) of Lexington; seven great-grandchildren-Whitney, Michael, Sarah, Will and Mary Dudley Bertram, Jonathan and Christopher Stevens; seven nieces and nephews; children of his beloved brother, Willie. He became a Christian at the age of 9 and joined the Big Springs Baptist Church. He was well known throughout the community as a Christian businessman and owner of the Bertram Jewelry Store for 33 years. He also served as Monticello's official Weather Observer for approximately 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. For many years he and his wife, Rosa, served as leaders at Newtown Mission. From his conversion until his death he served his church faithfully and walked humbly with his God. During his life he read the Bible through 45 to 50 times cherishing the Word in his heart. Funeral services were held Saturday December 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Bro. Charles Eugene Dick officiating. Burial followed in the Elk Spring Cemetery. Hickey and Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
