September 2, during the night the enemy evacuated his position [at Jonesboro], and orders were received to follow...and moved south on the main road to Lovejoy's. ...the Forty-sixth Ohio, Major Alexander, and One hundred and third Illinois, Capt Post, ...charged the rebel infantry. Lieut Mellen and Lieut Roberts, Forty-sixth Ohio, both very excellent officers, were killed in this advance. -OR Series 1 - Volume 38 (Part III) page 521

His mother, Emily Devoll, received a Mother's pension, 18 Oct 1878.
