On April 23, 1861, he enlisted in the 14th OVI, Company D along with his brother Franklin. He served his 3-month enlistment in the West Virginia campaign. He was mustered out in Toledo on August 13, 1861. He re-enlisted as a Sergeant for 3-years of service in the 14 OVI, Company E, along with his little brother Charles, on October 21, 1861. In the National Archives Descriptive roll of Company E at the National Archives, he was a 24-year old, 5"11" farmer with "light" complexion and black eyes and hair, and was born in Ontario County, New York.

Due to severe illness, he was reduced to a Private on November 16, 1862 and was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability in Gallatin, TN. He married Mary A. Forrest on August 27, 1863. They had three children: Franklin A., William Boyd, and Georgeanna. Georgeanna, named after her father, was born after he died of complications from dysentry.
