Herman T. Crow was born in Elkhart, Logan County, Illinois but spent most of his childhood in Topeka, Kansas. He married Edna Lenore Challis, a roomer in his parents' home, on June 11, 1901. While in Topeka he owned and managed baseball franchises and competed in billiards tournaments. Then, after he had moved to Seattle, Washington, and opened a saloon and billiards parlor, he married Victorine Caruthers Griffith on Jan. 10, 1910.
By 1911 he had moved to the San Diego area where he acquired a "lemon ranch." He had just purchased a new car when he was killed in an automobile accident on April 5, 1917, just one month after the birth of his son, Herman Albert Crow.
