Funeral of George F. Smith
Many army comrades and associates in peace gathered at Florence yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of George F. Smith, and the Methodist church was not large enough to accommodate the friends. There ceremonies were in charge of Hampshire Lodge of Masons of Haydenville, assisted by Jerusalem lodge of Northampton, W.L. Baker Grand Army post, with the Lilly drum corps doing escort duty. Comrade Smith was a corporal of Co. B, 31st regiment, and 35 members of his old regiment were present, with friends from this city, Boston, Williamsburg, Easthampton, Deerfield, Conway and other places. The scenes at the church were exceedingly touching, for his pastor, Rev. J.F. Allen, was so overcome that he could not proceed with the exercises, and his tears mingled freely with those that came from the many sad hearts in the assemblage. The pastor in his remarks spoke warmly of the virtues of the departed, delineating more especially his life as a soldier of Jesus Christ. David Remington, a faithful companion who was by his side during the rebellion, feeling spoke of his army life and relations, while Rev. A.C. Hussey dealt upon his life in Masonic circles and held him up as a man, who had realized the true end of life and had lived it faithfully and well. A quartet…sang "Remember thy Creator" and other selections. The floral tributes were profuse. The body was buried at Spring Grove cemetery with impressive Masonic ceremonies.
