Denver Ottis Mayes died February 27, 2006, at North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell, just a few days after his 86th birthday.
He was born February 23, 1920, in Goin, Claiborne County, Tenn., the seventh of 10 children, to Eli and Ella Mayes. He was raised in Tennessee until he joined the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served his country for 2 1/2 years, making 19 trips aboard ship across the Atlantic Ocean to North Africa.
In 1939 he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 19. He moved with his family to Wyoming in 1946. He married Hannah Haggen in 1950 in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple. They were blessed with three children: Carrol, Neil and Mona. He and his brother Deloy owned and operated Mayes Brothers Body Shop for many years. They also started D&D Automotive and Mayes Fabrics. He worked until he was 82 when he had a heart attack while doing what he liked to do, fixing a car. He worked hard all his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven of his brothers and sisters and his daughter, Mona Marie.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hannah; his daughter, Carrol Allred and husband Ed; his son, Neil Mayes and wife Lesa; his son-in-law Dean Wilkerson; his grandchildren, Aubry and Marc Jordan, Russell and Sarah Wilkerson, Brooke Wilkerson, Jeffrey and Anna Wilkerson, Kristin and Seth Owens, Steven Allred, Jacob Mayes and Amber Mayes. He is also survived by his seven great-grandchildren, Jared, Sierra, Kera, Sean, Mona, Kallie and Erin; and one brother and one sister.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, 2006, in the Lovell LDS Church. Interment followed in the Lovell Cemetery.
