James Percival Davenport was born in Alexandria Co. Virginia on Feb. 11, 1842 to Samuel Beck Davenport and Mary Ophelia Hunt. He spent his youth in New York state. He married Arletta Francelia Hawver on Nov. 20, 1871 in Watertown, New York.

They had three girls: Ada May, Edna Clara (my grandmother) and Ethel Vere. He served in the Civil War Navy (honorably discharged in Sept. 1865), was a mineralogist during the California gold rush, a San Francisco businessman, and a Los Angeles city councilman. He died in a streetcar collision in Los Angeles on December 1, 1905.
