John Ira Barton, loving and beloved father of Jessica Marie Barton, local CPA, revered son, brother, and friend of many, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, from complications of leukemia. Born December 16, 1954 in Shreveport, John was a resident of Lafayette for 42 years, he graduated from Acadiana High School in 1972 and USL in 1978.

A celebration of John's life will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, July 16, at the Asbury United Methodist Church Spirit Wind Worship Center, 101 Live Oak Blvd., Lafayette. The Reverend Ann Sutton will officiate.

Interment will be at Lafayette Memorial Park at 2111 W. Pinhook.

He was a member of Society of Louisiana CPAs and The American Institute of CPAs.

Aside from many professional accomplishments, John's greatest achievement and love was being Jessica's daddy, who came into his life nine years ago. He loved gatherings of his family and friends, and cooking big breakfasts for them. When time permitted, he loved to fish and fish trembled when they heard his name, most recently in May. He was also active at Asbury United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed the Spirit Wind service.

John is survived by his daughter, Jessica, and his parents, Charles and LaDonne Barton, all of Lafayette; three brothers, Tom Barton and wife, Linda, of Arlington, TX; Charles Barton, Jr., and wife, Sue, of Lafayette and Mark Barton and wife, Mona, of Lafayette; one sister, Laura Shepard and husband, Dan, of Richmond, Massachusetts; former spouse and friend, Anna Doucet, and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, and by a sister-in-law, Debbi Barton.

The family extends its thanks to Dr. Joseph Brierre, Dr. Karen Roden and the Oncology and Nursing Staff at Our Lady of Lourdes for their care of John during his illness; and to the Reverend Ann Sutton for her spiritual guidance and support.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed Friday from 4 P.M. until 9 P.M. and Saturday from 8 A.M. until time of services.

Pallbearers are Tom Barton, Charles Barton, Mark Barton, Dan Shepard, Trey Barton, Sam Porter, Jimmy Courcier, and Henry Begnaud. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Oliver, Bob Cazayoux, Ted Fontenot, John Galloway, Butch Romero, and Ken Langlinais.
