Mr. Downey was born Dec. 29, 1838, in Ohio. He came to Illinois in 1861. He served as a soldier in the Civil war until its close. Since 1866, he had resided in Mt. Zion, where he followed his trade of a wagon maker.
He married Miss Sarah B. Black in Mt. Zion Dec. 6, 1866.
He leaves, besides the widow, two sons, Thomas D. Downey of West Plains, Mo. and Lawton C. Downey of Odin, Ill.; brother, William Downey of Missouri.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the G.A.R.
