William DeWees was born circa 1676 in Leeuwanden, Friesland in the Netherlands and died March 3, 1745 in Germantown,PA. He is buried in the Upper Burying Ground in Germantown along with his wife, Anna Christina (Mehls) Meels. They migrated to America in 1689, entered through NY and settled in Germantown. William was a papermaker apprenticed to William Rittenhouse (in the first paper-mill) and sheriff of Philadelphia County. He was also Justice of the Peace. He was the son of Garrett Hendrick Dewees and Sijtske (sytje) (Sytie) Lieuwes both born in the Netherlands. William and Anna Dewees were the parents of 11 children, William, Wilhelmina, Dievertje, Lewis, Arriantje, Hendrick, Lysbeth, Cornelius, Johannes, Sarah, and Lambert.
