Hugh served in the War of 1812 as a private in first platoon, Cpt William Munn's Company, Ohio Militia, from 28 July 1813 until 28 August 1813 and from 16 Feb 1814 until 16 Mar 1814. On 18 Jun 1851 he applied for Veterans Bounty Land and was granted 40 acres. He sold this land, but an act of congress in 1855 allowed him to apply again; this time he was granted 120 acres. On 12 May 1871 Rebecca applied for a widow's pension based on his service and she was granted ( Case # 3856) $8.00 per month for each of the three months he was in the service.

"I, Hugh Gilliland, of Jackson County and State of Ohio, do make andish this my last will and testament. First, I give and devise to my beloved wife in lieu of her dower all my goods , chattels, moneys, credits and household furniture belonging to me at the time of my decease during her natural life as aforesaid. She however if it is required to sell so much there of as may be sufficient to pay my just debts. At the death of my said wife and goods, chattels, moneys and household furniture as a fore said and such part of the said property or proceeds there of as may then remain unconsumed and unexpended I give and devise to my daughter Julia Ann. I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me made. In testimony where of I have here unto set my hand and seal this 29th day of October AD 1855.
