William Clarence Stephens was born at Buffalo, Alabama, to Vernie and Pearl Lindsey Stephens, and died at the "Tut" Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL.
Mr. Stephens was predeceased by his parents; brother Melvin (Bud) Stephens; the mother of his first three children, Laura (Beth) Quinn Stephens; and son Richmond Stephens.
He is survived by his wife Inez Croft Stephens of Mount Olive community; daughters Laura Stephens Patterson of Huntsville, Sue Stephens McWhorter (Larry) of Madison, Kendra Stephens (Jude Ginder) of Roanoke; step-children Vicki Holloway (Victor) of Fayetteville, GA, Phyllis Rutherford (John) of Ashboro, NC, SMSgt. Christopher Rowe (Tracy) of Clovis, NM; grandson Adam Boothe (Deborah) of Huntsville, 16 step-grandchildren, great grandchildren Blake Boothe and Grace Boothe, 4 step-great grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.
After high school, he attended a technical school for aircraft mechanics in Nashville and worked for aircraft companies in Baltimore and Miami. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, then earned a B.A. degree in Chemistry at Baylor University. He returned to Alabama, purchased the family farm and taught sciences at Chambers County and Five Points High Schools while completing his M.S. in Education at Auburn Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University.
Upon completion of a course of study in aircraft engineering and mechanics at Northrop Aeronautical Institute, now Northrop Rice Advanced Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, CA, he returned to Chambers County and began work at Delta Air Lines, where he was liaison to the Federal Aviation Agency. He also earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from John Marshall University in Atlanta. He practiced law part-time until his retirement from Delta, then began a full-time law practice. All of this was done while he continued to farm and enjoy his avocation of flying.
Mr. Stephens was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church and its Men's Bible Class, and of the Civil Air Patrol, Roanoke Masonic Lodge No. 132, Alcazar and Zamora Shriner Temples, the Mt. Olive Community Club (president), was founding chairman of Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter. He was active for many years in Alabama Farmers Federation and was long-time secretary of the Chambers County Farmers Federation.
Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Quattlebaum Funeral Home with the funeral at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. Ben Bailie officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Stroud. Honorary pall bearers are members of the Men's Bible Class.
