Daughter of the late Henry Calvin and Ava Kitsy McLeod Arrants. Julia graduated magna cum laude from Columbia College with a B.A. degree in English in 1948. Later, she returned to college and received a master's degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina. She was a member of Kingston Presbyterian Church and served as church secretary for about 5 years in the 1960's. In 1967, the Waccamaw Mental Health Center opened and Julia was one of its first 3 employees. She began working there as an administrative assistant and, later, she became a mental health counselor. She worked there for more than 30 years until her retirement in 1998. As mentioned above, Julia was a member of Kingston Presbyterian Church for more than 45 years and she was very active in the Women of the Church group. She was also a member of CAP (Churches Assisting People) and served as Secretary/Treasurer several times. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rickey L. Smith, and by a son, Henry Scott Smith. She was survived by two daughters, Dawn Smith and Kitsy Smith Barnes (Reid); three grandchildren, Meredith A. Roest, William Benton Barnes and Rickey Arrants Barnes; and an extended family of relatives and friends. Her funeral was held at Kingston Presbyterian Church on December 2, 2004, with The Rev. Don Stiens and The Rev. Robert C. Wilkes officiating.
