The son of Jacob B. & Elizabeth (Bender) Smyers, he married Elizabeth Peters and fathered John Andrew (b. 01/22/50), Catharine I. (b. @1852), and George William (b. 11/??/58). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Huntington Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of forty in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 10 as a private with Co. K, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
