Mr. Hill was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Claudville, Va. He was the son of the late William Robert and Irene Smith Hill.
Mr. Hill was a retired farmer and active member of Welcome Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. He served two tours of military duty during WWII in France, Germany and Austria with the 42nd Infantry Division. He was a medical aidman and the recipient of the Bronze Star.
He was a devoted husband to his wife of 61 years, Lois Bouldin Hill. He is survived by a daughter, Shelby Hill Coe and husband Terry Coe of Lakeland, Fla.; son, Roger Hill and wife Delores Jessup Hill of Mount Airy; and daughter, Deborah Hill Welborn and husband Daniel Welborn. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Melissa Coe Whennell of Bracknell, England, Michele Coe Tester of Kernersville, Melanie Coe Wallace of Wendell, Zachery Hill of Boone and Katye Welborn and Amy Hill of Mount Airy. He has seven great-grandchildren, John Thomas, Alex and Michael Tester, Sydney and Macy Wallace and Fredrick and Harrison Whennell.
He is survived by two sisters, Vernell Coleman and Mary Brim; and two brothers, Charles Hill and Fred Hill. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, Larry and William Hill; and one sister, Lucille Gammons.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 9, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Welcome Baptist Church Friday, July 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. Mr. Hill will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
