CECILIA/CELIA L. STERNS was the daughter of LUCY ANN BROMLY and ORIN WILLIAM "Orange" STEARNS of MN. It is not known exactly when her family moved to MN, where she met her first husband ELI PIERRE GOODBEAU. She was described by some of her Goodboe descendants as tiny, sedate, and Irish.

Marriage #1: To ELI PIERRE GOODBEAU in 1888.
Location: Terrebonne, Red Lake Co, MN.

They settled on a farm in nearby Erskine and ELI ran logs downriver from Canada each spring. There is a discrepancy in the only two accounts known of CECILIA'S life during her marriage. One has her taking her young son EARL and possibly all her children to Oregon, then to MT where she died in 1908 or 1909.

The other, from ELI'S obituary, has her dying in 1895 in MN. Clearly neither is entirely correct as she gave birth to her last child, DELBERT ARTHUR LAMBERT, in 1901 during her second marriage, and she has a burial record and grave in Spokane, WA with a death date of 27 Feb 1909.

Her known children with ELI GOODBEAU:

1) Cora Mae Goodbeau Genereux (1890-1921).
Husband: Urbin "Herbert" Joseph GENEREUX (1881–1975)

2) Lucille Louise Goodbeau Nichols (1891-1945)
Husband: Charles Norris Nichols (1885–1966)

3) Laura Maude Goodbeau Davis Mills (1893-1989)
Husband 1: John William Davis (1885–?)
Husband 2: William Mills (1897–?)

4) Frank George Goodbeau/Goodbou (1894-1918)

5) Earl George Goodboe (1899-1980)
Wife: Grace Lorraine Dawson (1904–1986)

Marriage #2: To Fred Harry Lambert on 10 April 1902.
Location: Spokane, Spokane Co, WA.

Their known children:
1) Delbert Arthur Lambert (1901-1901).

The marriage return for this wedding is available on Washington State Digital Archives under "Marriages". On it CELIA listed herself as a widow, apparently in order to account for her children from her first marriage and avoid scandal. She gave her name as CELIA GOODBOO, a spelling often used among her first husband's family in MN. She listed her age as 26. FRED was 31.

CELIA married at age 14 or 15, had 6 children by age 24, and lost her mother when she was 21. FRED LAMBERT was a neighbor farmer who may also have gone to Canada with ELI GOODBOE at least once to run logs downstream. But he apparently spent more time on his farm and may have been supportive of CELIA while ELI was away working.

Whatever happened between them CELIA ran away to Washington state with FRED LAMBERT where at least some of his and her relatives apparently lived (her sister LILLIAN LEOTA STEARNS died in Spokane on 23 March 1900). She was pregnant with her last child, DELBERT LAMBERT, who was born on 1 Aug 1901 and died on 10 Nov 1901.

Following the death of little DELBERT, CELIA and FRED LAMBERT had their marriage recorded in Spokane County, WA on 10 April 1902.

CELIA'S exact path after leaving Minnesota seems to have included time in Montana, though her connection to that area is unknown at this time; possibly it was relatives on FRED LAMBERT'S side. Her daughters LUCILLE and LAURA were living in MT by their late teens and married to men in Ravalli County before they reached the age of 20, though whether they went to Washington with her and were returned to relatives in MT after her death, or she dropped them off there on her way west is unknown.

Her surviving son EARL GOODBOE told a newspaper interviewer at his home in Missoula that his mother took him to Oregon, but after her death when he was 9 he was raised by his father and stepmother in Terrebonne, MN. However he moved to Stevensville, MT to be near his sisters in 1922.

Note: Cemetery office records show no headstone.
