US Congressman and Mayor of Carmi. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in the 1st Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he served as judge of White County, Illinois, 1873 to 1881 and as Sheriff of White County, 1892 to 1894. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
