Venerable Apiarist Died as He Slept
Charles Broadhurst of Cottonwood Passed at the Age of 82
Charles Broadhurst, an apiarist since 1865, died in the county hospital before day this morning. He must have been dead an hour or two when the fact was discovered. The old gentleman died peacefully as he slept. He had been in extremely poor health for over a year, or since he fell from his horse near his apiary in Cottonwood and broke his hip. Soon after that accident he was brought to the county hospital. Mr Broadhurst became a great care during the closing months of his life. His great age of 82 years alone made him feeble, almost helpless.
Charles Broadhurst was born in the state of Michigan December 22, 1831. He came to California in 1868, living in Merced and Napa counties until 1882, when he settled in Cottonwood. He was one of the ablest apiarists in the state. His wife died in 1859. He never married a second time*. The decedent leaves only one son, Theodore F Broadhurst of this [word/s omitted].
The Houston company has charge of the funeral arrangements.
*He actually married a Mrs Zeder on 24 Mar 1897; she sued for divorce in 1901, but it was not granted.
