Robert was the son of Benjamin Parker Cook, Sr. and Oma Hurley Cook. On 22 September 1950, Robert Gould Cook and Mattie Ruth (Kidd) Anderson were married in Austin, Travis Couunty, Texas. On 5 June 1985, Robert Gould Cook and Zula Alzenia (Patterson) Hickerson were married in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada.

Cpl. Robert Gould Cook served in the United States Army during World War II, and he was a prisoner of war. On 25 November 1940, Robert enlisted in the US Army in Abilene, Taylor, Texas. Robert Gould Cook was held as a prisoner of war at Fukuoka-O6B-Mizumaki Prisoner of War Camp and was a survivor of the camp. He was part of the "Lost Battalion" , FA131, Battery E.
