Bill is a 1952 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Madison, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology/Geography. He enrolled in the US Air Force and was accepted into the Officer's Candidate School in 1953. While continuing his education at the University of Washington Meteorology and Forestry departments, he met his wife of 49 years, Udell. During the Korean War, Bill was a Captain stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bill moved to Wenatchee in 1961, landing a job with the US Forest Service. His career as one of the original research scientists at Wenatchee Forest Hydrology Laboratory spanned 24 years. Always "tinkering" to the tune of a quiet, busy whistle, Bill could create or improvise any equipment for work or home. In 1971, Bill had an idea for an instrument to analyze wind velocity. Within three months, the wind analyzer was complete and tested. Four years after initial patent application, William Fowler was listed as inventor and received his patent in 1977.
Retirement in 1985 meant only more time to enjoy activities and to share his love of the ocean, forest, and nature with his family. Memories of picnics, trips, and Fowler Family Adventures will never be forgotten.
Under the outstanding care of Dr. Jacqueline Vuky, the nurses and staff at Virginia Mason in Seattle, Bill fought a valiant eleven month battle with pancreatic cancer. He, however, did not lose the battle to the cancer. His love for family, fight for health, and unshakable faith in God never once allowed the cancer an opportunity to overcome his incredible spirit. Bill's courage and exceptional attitude will remain forever with all the lives he touched.
As one journey ends and another begins, Bill has joined his parents, his in-laws, Roy and Pearl Anderson, his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Ellen Fowler. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Udell, his children Jennifer Pellicone (Joseph) of Massapequa, NY, Janis Terpstra (Steven) of Woodinville, WA, and Curtis Fowler (Geri) of Machias, WA. He was an inspiration and devoted grandfather to six grandsons: Chris Fowler, Jonathan Terpstra, Erik Terpstra, Conner Fowler, Christopher Pellicone, and Stephen Pellicone. Bill is also survived by a cousin, Thomas O'Brien (Eleanor) of Victoria, BC, a niece Mary Ellen Heinicke (Ernie), a nephew, James Fowler, and their families in Florida.
Memorials may be made to: The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research; 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714
