Decatur Man Killed In Kentucky

Edwin D. Booth, 54, of east Decatur, was killed instantly shortly after noon Thursday when a Greyhound bus in which he was a passenger veered into a ditch near Falmouth, Ky.

Mr. Booth, who had been employed as a truck transport driver for Fugate & Girton, Fort Wayne, for the past nine years, was en route home after delivering a cargo for the Fort Wayne firm.

According to Kentucky State Police, the accident occurred when Lowell Estridge, 39, of Knoxville, Tenn., driver of the bus, veered off the road to avoid a collision and the bus plunged down a 30-foot embankment.

The Decatur man was killed instantly when he suffered a broken neck when he was thrown forward.

At least 20 other bus passengers were injured, only one seriously.

Three Involved

Authorities said three vehicles were involved. An auto driven by Leonard Duncan started to pass a trailer truck, both headed south. Duncan saw the oncoming northbound bus and veered off into a ditch. So did the bus driver and the truck driver, Charles C. Cox, of Winfield, Tenn. All three vehicles ended up on their sides beside the highway.

Funeral Sunday

The accident victim was born in Reading, Pa., Feb. 17, 1906, a son of Ervin L. and Emma Drayer-Booth, and was married to Agnes L. Foreman June 26, 1936.

Mr. Booth was a member of the Union Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Edwina Hart of Decatur Route 3; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Edyth M. Wolfe and Mrs. Miriam McDonel, both of Harrisburg, Pa., and two brothers, Irvin Booth of Erie, Mich., and Merrill R. Booth of Harrisburg, Pa.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Zwick Funeral Home and at 4 p.m. at the Union Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church, the Rev. Kenneth Angle officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening until time of the services.
