Jake lived most of his life in Saline County, Kansas, where he farmed in the Walnut township near Mentor. He and Mary Elizabeth 'Mame' were married April 24, 1901 at the Sacred Heart Church in Salina, Kansas. They were the parents of nine children; James, Leo, Agnes, Raymond, Mary, Joseph, George, and twins Helen and Clara. His wife, Mame, died in 1915 in Canada, shortly after the birth of the twins.
Jake married his second wife, Bridget, in 1918. He was a member of the Sacred Heart parish.
Survivors included the widow, Bridget; four sons, James, Leo, Raymond and George Bachofer; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Duffy and Mrs. Mary Gray; one brother, Henry A. Bachofer; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Abbott.
