Emily was born to Samuel and Maria Dewhirst Jackson in Leeds, England, the middle of three children. I haven't been able to verify the facts of when she migrated to Canada, but she told me that Tom, her husband-to-be, had gone there and returned to get her so they could marry. She said she was 17. I know that her sister also married and lived in Toronto, Canada, but not the particulars of how and when she got there.
Emily and Tom were married in 1912 in Cobalt, northern Ontario. Their two oldest children were born there; their youngest was born in Toronto while Tom was serving in the Canadian Armed Services, CO-SEF, during WWI.
They emigrated to the Detroit area about 1919. Emily attended classes on US Citizenship. She was very diligent. Tom worked at a variety of jobs. All the men in the family worked at the Ford plant in Highland Park at one time. I recall some of the time Emily and Tom lived in the apartment house in Detroit. His parents had managed it, but mt grandparents took over management when they left MI.
After Tom died in 1942, Emily went back to live in Toronto for a few years, possibly with her sister. A cousin remembers visiting her there. In 1945, she married a man their family had known in Cobalt. Charles Woolgar, was now a widower, but he and his wife had been neighbors of Tom and Emily's.
Since I was still young, he became Grandpa Woolgar. They came back to the US and lived in Plymouth and Royal Oak, MI. We were able to spend our growing years close to grandparents on both sides of our family and have many fond memories of those years. One fact always stood out with Grandma. She never lost her English accent or love of tea even though she'd left England in her late teens.
Grandpa died in 1963 while they lived in Royal Oak. Grandma and her son eventually moved to Florida where he worked at various jobs including managing apartments. They both died while down there and are buried in Acacia Park Cemetery.
