Obituary:
Area Man Fatally Burned
Jacob Raybuck, of Knox Township, Is Explosion Victim
An exploding, flaming kerosene can caused the death of a well known area farmer and miner on Tuesday. The victim was Jacob Raybuck, 61, a resident of Knox township.
Mr. Raybuck had arisen at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning and was preparing for work at an area mine. The explosion occurred when he lit a coal stove in the kitchen of his home, using a can of kerosene to start the blaze.
Flames from the stove ignited the fumes coming from the kerosene can and the can exploded in his hands. Immediately, the upper portion of his body was covered with the flaming liquid and he breathed the fire into his lungs causing severe internal damage.
The explosion aroused his wife, mother and daughter, who wrapped Raybuck in blankets. It was several minutes, however, before they could control the flames on his body.
Dr. Wayne McKinley was called and gave emergency treatment at the home. Raybuck was rushed to the hospital where injection of plasma, a blood transfusion and other treatment failed to save him. He died at approximately 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Raybuck was highly regarded by fellow residents in the Knox Township, where he had resided for the past several years. He was a veteran of World War I.
A native of Oliver township, the deceased was born January 30, 1892 and was the son of Adam and Lydia Raybuck. He was married on May 27, 1925, to the former Bernice Geist, of Timblin, Pa.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Lewis E. Raybuck, of Sprankle Mills and Mary, at home and the following sisters and brother, Mrs. Mary Reitz, Ohl, Pa.; Mrs. Cora Burkett, Oliveburg, Pa,; Mrs. Bess Stahlman, Reynoldsville, R. D. 3 and Reed Raybuck, also of Reynoldsville. Three grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul`s Lutheran Church, Coolspring, Pa., with the Rev. Ralph Brooks officiating. Internment will be in the Coolspring Cemetery.
