The son of Emanuel Carpenter & Anna Elizabeth (Snyder) Dorwart, in 1860 he was a salesman living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster July 1, 1863, mustered into federal service that day as a private with the six-month organization of Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery, and honorably discharged with the battery January 7, 1864. He did not re-enlist with the three-year-organization.
He married Ottilia A. Hoffman and fathered Ellen Bertha (b. 08/09/66). He died at his home from "sarcoma [of the] neck."
