Gerard L. LeBel,77 of the Prescott Road,and formerly of Bangor,died unexpectedly Jan.13,2002 in the emergency room at Maine General Medical Center,Augusta. He was born in Westbrook, Maine, on Sept.12,1924, the son of Lucien LeBel and Bernadette (LaBerge) LeBel. Mr. Lebel served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp. as a Sargent stationed in Okinawa during WWII. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for service in Okinawa, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/bronze star, Victory Medal of WWII, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal w/Asia Clasp.
Gerard was also a member of the Maine Army National Guard from 1946 to 1983. Prior to his retirement Mr. LeBel was employed for over 30 years as a technician with the Maine Army National Guard at Camp Keyes. After his retirement, he worked part time for Kennebec Valley Transit and Chambers Leasing.
Mr. LeBel was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Augusta, a member of the Calumet Club, Fitzgerald-Cummings American Legion Post #2 of Augusta and the Augusta Amateur Radio Club.
Gerard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Theresa Murdock.
Surviving is his wife, Arlene (Blanche)LeBel of Manchester,two sisters, Mrs. Rudolph (Jeannette) Gagnon of Portland and Victorine LeBel of Scarborough; two brothers, Roger LeBel of Henderson, Nev. and Lucien LeBel of Westbrook; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, where members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 7 p.m. to offer a prayer service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. Spring burial will be in North Manchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 41 Western Avenue, Augusta, Maine 04330 or the North Manchester Meeting House, P.O. Box 240, Manchester, Maine 04351.
