Mildred Marie Bowman Jeffers, 92, of the Rheatown community, died Thursday at Laughlin Health Care Center.

Her family provided the following statement:

"Mrs. Jeffers passed away after many years of devoted and loving service to her Lord, her family, and the many Greene County students who came through her classroom during a long teaching career.

"Mrs. Jeffers was born April 9, 1917, in the Horse Creek community. She graduated from Chuckey High School (Class of 1936), where she was an outstanding student and athlete.

"She is quite well known for her excellent basketball skills and would later play senior basketball well into her 70s.

"After graduating from East Tennessee Normal School (now East Tennessee State University), she began her teaching career at Forest Hills School and would continue her career in the Greene County School System until she retired in 1975.

"She is fondly remembered by many of her students as a wonderful if not a strict teacher. She was affectionately called "Peanut" and Mimi.

"She married Willard Lowery Jeffers on April 30, 1939. They were married for 54 years and had one child, Eddie Bowman Jeffers.

"She was very active in her church, Albright United Methodist, and was a member for approximately 70 years.

"She taught the women's Sunshine Class, and was a member of the choir, secretary of the United Methodist Women, and church historian."

Survivors include: her daughter-in-law: Brenda Jeffers; two grandchildren and a grandson-in-law: John Jeffers of Highlands, N.C., and Suzanne Jeffers Waybright and her husband, Jeff; and one great-grandchild: Matthew Barton Waybright, all of Johnson City; a sister and brother-in-law: Joyce and Glenn Broyles of Chuckey; a special niece and her husband: Teresa and Eddie Kilday; a special great-niece: Tonya Shell; a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law: Rex B. and Helen Jeffers of Tusculum, Mauveline Jeffers of Sulphur Springs, and Mary Ruth Jeffers of Johnson City; and "several dear nieces and nephews and cousins" of the Bowman, Johnson and Jeffers families.
