The old spring which supplied the Hinton and Martin families in South Carolina was located in back of Thomas Hinton's home and about equal distance from the boyhood home of James. It is said this spot was the "courting ground" of James and Nancy. An antedote is told that James would often visit the Hinton Home and when lieving, Nancy would accompany him as far as the spring, with an empty bucket for water. Martin would dip the bucket and place it upon Nancy's head and as she would steady it there with both hands, Martin very slyly would kiss his sweetheart good-night.
