David was the oldest of nine children born to Jonathan and Mary Susannah (Smith) Hacker. His siblings were: Nancy Ann, Jonathan III, John, Jonas, Elizabeth, William, Thomas, and Sarah.

David married Catherine Giles in Ohio on 20 May 1824. They had seven children, six of whom reached adult age, namely:
(1) James Malcomb Hacker was born ca 1826.
(2) Agnes Jane Hacker was born in 1827 and died April 22, 1892. She became the wife of Robert Stogdel.
(3) Elizabeth Ann Hacker was born November 30, 1828, died September 12, 1850
(4) Sarah Hacker who died in infancy
(5) William S.Hacker was born April 13, 1834, died January 20, 1899
(6) John Wesley Hacker was born February 26, 1838, died September 23, 1897
(7) Francis Asbury was born July 11, 1843, and was a farmer in Nemaha county, Nebraska.

David died in Soldiers Hospital in St. Louis, MO. His tombstone at the right shows us that he was a Private in the US Army during the Civil War. He served in Company I of the 37th Iowa Infantry and died from typhoid contracted during his service. The 37th Iowa was known as the "Greybeard Regiment" because all its 915 members were over the draft age of 45 years.
