Johann Friedrich "J.F.W." Ahrens, was born in 1818 in Holstein. He arrived in Texas in 1847 aboard the ship Natchez. He was a cabinet maker and at one time had his own shop at the corner of Post Office and 22nd Street. He fought in the Civil War for the 1st Texas Infantry State Troops. Johann married Bettie Burtner and to this union at least 3 children were born; Wilhelmina, Betty and Ann.
