Alfred L. Cox, age 87, of Wabasha, died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center in Wabasha.

He was born July 5, 1921, in Highland Township of Wabasha County, the son of Michael and Gertrude (Fischer) Cox. He was raised in Kellogg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Agnes Catholic Church there and attended Kellogg Public School. He married Margaret Wodele April 18, 1942, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the battles and campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and central Europe.

He returned to Wabasha after the war, and in 1946 he and his brother-in-law, John Wodele, purchased the Wabasha Transfer and did water and sewer construction until 1952, when he sold his share to John and purchased the Alvin Peterson farm on Sand Prairie, rural Wabasha, where he started a resort business.

Margaret died Nov. 16, 1960. He married Evelyn Goslee May 23, 1961, in Austin. He and Evelyn added food to the resort and renamed it the Pioneer Supper Club. In 1967, they built the Pioneer Camp Site. They later sold the camp site to Ron Kruger, and in 1975 they sold the Pioneer Supper Club to Mike Talent. Al then sold real estate until 1991, when he retired. The couple then moved to Texas. They moved back to Wabasha in 1995. Evelyn died Feb. 22, 2008.

Alfred was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church. He was also a life member of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50 where he served as commander in 1977 and a life member of the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Michael and Delores Cox, Shell Lake, Wis., Mark and Doreen Cox, Wabasha; stepson Allen (Jeanette) Goslee, Lincoln, Neb.; stepdaughter Sherri Goslee Caven, Wabasha; six grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Helen Cox and Katherine Cox, both of Michigan; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Margaret and Evelyn; grandson Josef Cox; two brothers, Wilmer and Melvin; and two sisters, Margie and Lorraine.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Felix Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Connelly officiating. Interment will be in St. Felix Cemetery. The Wabasha American Legion and VFW posts will perform military rites. Friends may call from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday at Abbott Funeral Home, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday one hour before the service. Memorials are preferred to St. Elizabeth's Health Care Center or to St. Felix Church. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.
