Washington S. Smith, 82, former member of the Illinois Legislature from the Decatur district, and chairman of the Macon couty board of supervisors when the present county building was erected in 1891, died at 9:30 pm, Thursday in his home at Mt. Zion.
During his active life, Mr. Smith was prominent throughout Central Illinois as a grain dealer and farmer, as well as in Democratic politics. He had resided in the Mt. Zion community since boyhood.
He began farming operations in 1881, engaging extensively in stock-raising. He was first elected to the board of supervisors in 1885, serving six years, the last two as chairman. The following year he was elected to the Legislature, and was returned for a second term. He retired from politics after four years in the assembly, devoting his full time to operation of grain businesses he acquired in Mt. Zion, Hervey City and Prairie Hall. He was the first president of the Mt. Zion State bank.
Born in Bath county, Kentucky, Sept. 27, 1850, Mr. Smith came with his parents to Macon county in 1857. He was married in 1881 to Gertrude Ulery at Mt. Zion, his wife preceding him in death in 1927. He leaves four children: Mrs. D.S. McGaughey, Sidney and Paul Smith, all of Mt. Zion, and Guy Smith, of San Jose, Cal. He leaves also four sisters, Mrs. O.M. Scott and Miss Maria Smith, both of Mt. Zion; Mrs. Minerva Humphrey, Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. H. N. Green, Decatur. Mr. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church in Mt. Zion, and of the Odd Fellows lodge there.
The body was brought to the Dawson & Wikoff funeral home, but arrangements for the services had not been competed late Thursday.
