Ben is a descendant of Isaac Allerton, Mary (Norris) Allerton and their daughter Remember (Allerton) Maverick all of whom came over on the Mayflower.

Ben's 6th great-grandmother is Rebecca Towne Nurse (or Nourse) (February 21, 1621 – July 19, 1692) was executed for witchcraft by the government of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. Rebecca had acquired a reputation for exemplary piety that was virtually unchallenged in the community, making her one of the "unlikely" persons to be accused of witchcraft.

When Ben's daughter Harriet E. Nichols was married in September 1917 in McIntire, IA, she lists her dad as Chas Nichols and that she was adopted by her uncle J.P. Branigan and her aunt Carolina Eugenia (Nichols) Branigan.
When Harriet's mother Harriet died, she was adopted by her father's sister Carolina Eugenia Branigan and Jerome Branigan.
Charles' family tree is traced back to Charlemagne in the book "Pedigrees of some of the Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants" by J. Orton Buck & Timothy Field Beard
