James' surname at birth was Crabb.

James Crabtree's parents and family lived in New Brunswick, Canada at the start of the war of 1812 with the US. During this war many Canadians moved residence into the State of Maine. It is believed one of these families was James' and possibly explains why he claimed in his own biography to be born in the state of Maine rather than in NB, Canada.
