Martha's obituary leaves some question in our minds as to the date of her death, follow up research is required.

Martha's obituary was provided by Evelyn Mabry of the Bulloch County Historical Society. It appeared in the Friday May 12, 1905 issue of the Statesboro News, Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia, as follows:

"In Memory
Of Mrs. Hesiciah Bowen

After nearly two weeks of painful and serious suffering Mrs. Morthy Ann Bowen passed from this world of toil and care to the Great Beyond, and is now basking in the sunshine of God's eternal love.

Mrs. Bowen, nee Sikes, was born July 28, 1835; was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Heseciah Bowen Feb. 15, 1857. She joined the Missionary Baptist church during the war, and lived a devoted member until eight years ago, having moved to Wayne county she united with the Primitive Baptist church at Bethesda.

The husband has lost a devoted wife, her dear children a kind and loving mother, the church a faithful and devoted member. Her funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Elder W. B. Brannen, on March 12, 1905, in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends at Bethesda church, Wayne county, where her remains were laid to rest.

A precious one from us is gone.
A voice me loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our homes.
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love has given,
And though the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in heaven.
Rest in peace, dear grandmama
On that bright eternal shore,
Where no sickness, pain or sorrow
Shall visit thee no more.
Written by her grand-daughter,
Mollie Beasley, Stilson, Ga."

No headstone has been found for Martha, we suspect she is buried near her husband, Hezekiah.
