A. Hartwell "Tippy" Coons, 86, 309 East Sixth St., Rushville, Ind., died at 5:10 a.m. Monday, May 2, 1994 in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born Oct. 9, 1907 in Bloomington, Ind., he was the son of George W. and Caroline (Bass) Coons. He married Alvene Berry Dec. 24, 1927 and she survives.

He graduated from Rushville High School in 1925. He started his career in journalism working for the Milroy Press, and for a commercial printing firm in Louisville, Ky. He joined the staff of the Rushville Republican in 1930. Later he served as business manager and was publisher when the company was purchased by Worrell Newspapers in 1974. This made a total of more than 50 years in newspaper and printing work. During those years he earned many awards for excellence in news content, photography and typography. He was an elder and former Sunday school superintendent of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Rushville. He was a director of the Rush County Mental Health Association; a director of the Rush County representative Area 9 Council on Aging; past president of Rush County Chamber of Commerce; lifetime member and past chancellor of the Knights of Pythias, a past president and named a Melvin Jones Fellow in Lions Club and active with the Boys Club and a 4-H photography leader.

In addition to his wife, Alvene Berry Coons Rushville, survivors include a daughter, Patricia Coons, Miami, Fla.; a son, George E. Coons, Rushville; and three grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and three brothers.

The Rev. Mae Hicks will conduct services at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Rushville.

Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery in Rushville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Todd Funeral Home, 805 N. Main St., Rushville.

It is suggested that memorials go to the charity of the donor's choice.
