George Lechler, 77, of Hewitt, passed away at his home, Monday, June 29, 2009. Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Troy Cobb officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at the funeral home.

Angus George was born in Valley Mills, Texas, to the late George Fred and Viola Lou Moore Lechler. At the age of 14, George lied his way into the U. S. Army. On Aug. 22, 1951, he married Wilma Faye Goodnight in Wortham Bend, Texas. They enjoyed going to the horse races and leaving their California home to drive over to Las Vegas, where he liked to throw craps. In 1973, they moved back home to Waco, where he was a dog catcher for five to six years for the City of Woodway. He then became the owner/operator of Lechler Janitorial from 1978 to 1995. George was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were two sons, Ricky George and Larry Dean.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife of 58 years, Wilma Lechler, of Hewitt; son, Brad Lechler, of Hewitt; grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Cody, Ben, Becky, Chris and Josh Lechler; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Freddie Griffith and Doyle Gene Lechler; sisters, Verna Lee Shawl and Betty Joan Flick; and many other family members and friends.
