Tommy Heater Dies Saturday In Hospital

Tommy Heater is dead. He died on Saturday April 28, 1956 after an operation in which his physician fought vainly to correct a condition resulting from huge clots of blood in his abdomen. His death marked the end of long and difficult battle for life which began the evening of April 7, when a bullet from a rifle in the hands of a friend entered his stomach and lodged against his spine after doing great deal of damage.

Testimony of the two boys present at the time of the accident has established that the shooting was accidental. Coroner Norman Daniels said today he did not know definitely whether he would call an inquest into the boy's death.

The fight for the boy's life was marked by a "Tommy Heater Friendship Fund" begun by neighbors and marked by large and small contributions. The fund reached approximately $700 last week.

Thomas Grant Heater was 16. His funeral service will be held at First Christian Church tomorrow, (May 1) at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gene Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Newberg where he was born on June 5, 1939. The family had lived in La Grande for five years. Daniels Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements here.

Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heater: two brothers, David and Chester and two sisters, Linda and Kay; all of La Grande. Grandparents; all of Newberg include Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Beasley and Mrs. Grant Heater. A great grandmother Mrs. E. E. Vice lives at Terrebonne. Other survivors include five uncles and eight aunts.
