The reason there is a flag and GAR holder is because the local Sons of Union Veterans organization incorrectly thought he was the Joseph Dillon who served in Co. C of the 80th Indiana Infantry, but that person is memorial ID # 24798734. Also there is no Joseph Dillon buried in Greenwood on the 1929 Honor Roll of veterans buried in Illinois. Therefore, based upon all the evidence, Joseph H. Dillon was not a Civil War veteran.
Sadly, the original upright monument shown in the photos was removed when the incorrect stone was installed without the permission of the cemetery.
