The funeral for Vaughn Elton Fickel will be 10 a.m. Monday (Nov 5) in the chapel at Burns Mortuary of Hermiston with burial to follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Irrigon, Umatilla, (Oregon). Mr. Fickel, 85 of Hermiston, died Tuesday Oct 30, 2001, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston. He was born Sept 30, 1916, at Bladen, Nebraska to George W. and Amy Jane Trumbo Fickel. He grew up at Marsland, Nebraska and graduated Marsland High School. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a sergeant and was attached to the Flying Tigers of Asian Theatre in Central Burnma and India. His name has been submitted by his daughter, Donna Jane Kampbell for placement on the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Mr. Fickel was a 20-year member of the Hermiston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4750. On Dec 24, 1960, he married his second wife, Elsie Mae Knapp at Hemingford, Nebraska. Mrs. Fickel died Oct 16, 2001. While his children were growing up, he loved to take them on road trips to see the different sited. The Fickels came to Hermiston 20 years ago. Mr. Fickel was employed by the railroad, retiring in 1968. He had been a member of the Methodist Church and Parent Teacher Association in Nebraska. He colleted model cars sent to him through the years by his children. He also enjoyed watching baseball and spent many hours playing with semi-pro players in his youth. He enjoyed home projects and mechanic work. Survivors include sons; Connie Vaughn Fickel of Morrill Co., Nebraska, Gaylin Bryce Fickel of Heppner, Kenneth Dean Fickel of Hermiston, Terry Allen Fickel in Texas, daughter, Donna Jane Kampbell in Colorado; stepchildren, Harold Jim Willis and Carolyne Dittfirth, both of Texas and foster daughter, Kathy Peterson of Vancouver, Washington; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in Charge of arrangements.
