ROANOKE - The Roanoke Public Library has been renamed the Annie L. Awbrey Library in honor of the woman who served as librarian for 36 years.
The change was marked earlier this week at a library ceremony attended by Mrs. Awbrey, currently a resident at Traylor Nursing Home, and a group of about 50 persons.
City Councilman Audley Bruner, a longtime friend of the library, presented Mrs. Awbrey. with a memorial plaque during the short ceremony .
The library was founded in 1934. Mrs. Awbrey became librarian in 1941. a position she held until her retirement In 1977.
