John Pearl Youngblood was born 28 November 1838 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Henry Youngblood and Sarah Miller Harvey. On 15 April 1862 John enlisted in the Confederate Cavalry in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was assigned to Co A, 6th. Louisiana Cavalry. He was wounded at the Battle of Helena, Arkansas which resulted in the loss of his foot. John was paroled June 1865. On 3 January 1866 he married Matilda Elias Norwood, daughter of George Alexander "Sandy" Norwood and Mary Matilda Lenoir. They eloped to Shelby County, Texas. Matilda was born 3 January 1848 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, and died 8 July 1931 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. John Pearl and Matilda earned their living by teaching school.

John Pearl Youngblood served as the first mayor of Hemphill, Texas after its incorporation in 1860.

John died 10 February 1903 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. John and Matilda are buried in Noble Cemetery in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
