Staunton Spectator and Vindicator, Staunton, Va. 11-27-1908: Mr. David W. Landes died on Sunday morning at his home on North Madison street, of heart failure, although his health has not been good for some time, his death was unexpected. “Davy” Landes as he was called by his friends, of whom the county was full, was born in Augusta county on the 17th of March, 1836, and had spent most of his life in this vicinity. For years he conducted a livery business and was always found upright in his dealings with everybody. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Caroline V. Cook and who has been an invalid for some years, also by one daughter, Miss Florence Landes, and four sons, Messrs. James H., David J., John F., and H. H. Landes. He leaves one sister, Mrs. George M. Cook, of Mount Sidney, and two brothers, Mr. W. R. Landes, postmaster at Mt. Sidney, and Mr. Henry Landes of Stonewall. The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the Lutheran church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. D. R. Hancher, and a large concourse of friends from the county as well as the city assembly to pay tribute to the memory of a good man and friend.
